Iran’s envoy to Yemen Hassan Irloo hit back at the US government for ordering a Saudi-led military campaign against Yemenis after the US Treasury Department imposed sanctions on him.
“The leading role of the US in the crimes against people of the region, particularly Yemenis, is obvious,” the Iranian envoy said Wednesday.
Irloo also said that the Saudi regime is only carrying out the American-Zionist policies and following their orders by imposing a blockade on Yemen and committing acts of aggression against Yemenis.
In addition to the Iranian diplomat, Iran’s Al-Mustafa International University has been blacklisted by the US Treasury.
The ambassador and the university were all targeted under US Executive Order 13224.
As a result of Tuesday’s action, all property of those designated, as well as of any entities 50% or more owned by them, that fall under US jurisdiction are blocked, and US persons are generally prohibited from dealing with them.
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said in a recent report that the ongoing Saudi-led war against Yemen has claimed 233,000 lives over the last six years.
Yemen has reached a critical point and there is an urgent need for a ceasefire now, the UNOCHA said.
Saudi Arabia and a coalition of its vassal states launched the war on Yemen in March 2015 in an attempt to reinstall a Riyadh-backed former regime.
The coalition has, however, achieved none of its goals thanks to stiff resistance by the Ansarullah-led Yemeni army.
The Saudi military aggression, coupled with a naval blockade, has killed hundreds of thousands of people and plunged Yemen into what the UN says the world’s worst humanitarian crisis.
